Llegue a la Serena en julio de 1973 y si a principio era para 2 meses de vacaciones, al final yo me quedé un poco más de 2 años. La razón siendo que en abril 1974 fue a Santiago para hacer mi curso de piloto privado en el aeródromo de Tobalaba.
Volviendo a La Serena tuve la oportunidad de conocer a Manfred Sams quien recién desarrollaba un proyecto de prospección pesquera en la zona. Gracias a Manfred logré ganar experiencia y sobre todo acumular horas de vuelos en el Cessna 337 Skymaster volando de noche en la zona de Tongoy.
En esa época no solía encontrarse lo que hoy en día son los spotters así que para mi fue una oportunidad desarrollar contactos y amistades con el personal del aeródromo de la Florida.
También logré ver a menuda aviones que no se operaban más en Europa o si lo eran, en muy escasos cantidades. Quiero recordar la llegada del Curtiss C-46 de LASA debido a un problema de motor.
En estos años LAN Chile era la única que operaba vuelos a la ciudad de la Serena con los Hawker Siddeley 748 sobre nombrados también “Avro”. Era la oportunidad no solo de tomarles fotos sino también de viajar a Santiago, en estos tiempos al aeródromo de Los Cerrillos.
Les presento a continuación un condensado de fotos tomada en la losa de la Florida entre 1973 y 1975.

 

 

 

 

 

Volví a La Serena en los años 80 para una visita de corto tiempo y por supuesto tomé la oportunidad de visitar el aeródromo. Lastimosamente las oportunidades de ver aviones no se presentaron a parte de unos cuantos Skymaster que me recordaran momentos de alegría.

 

 

En 2009 luego de tomar mi jubilación decidimos volver a Chile y nuestra primera visita fue a la Serena ya que tenemos familia radicada en esta ciudad del norte. Eso me hace recordar que el mundo, siendo tan grande, puede ser a la vez bien chico y uno vuelve muchas veces a su punto de partida.

Para la semana del 18 de septiembre 2017 decidimos visitar nuestros familiares en la Serena así que el 19 luego de un vuelo de 50 minutos aterrizamos en el aeródromo de La Serena. Me hacía recordar los vuelos de 1h10-1h15 en los “Avro” saliendo desde Los Cerrillos o también los de 1h30 con el Skymaster desde Tobalaba.
El tráfico aéreo se ha ampliado más en estos años y contamos no solo con LATAM o Jet Smart en Airbus A320 pero también los A319-320 de Sky Airline. También Amaszonas Línea Aérea opera vuelos desde Arica, Iquique, Antofagasta, Copiapó con destino final a la Serena 3 veces por semana.
Toqui Aero Servicios Ltda. tiene su base de operación en la Florida y opera vuelos de turismo o charter, paracaidismo y salto tándem, fotografía aérea y también dispone de una escuela de vuelo (http://www.aerotoqui.cl/web/) Opera con 2 Airvan 8, Cessna 172M y Tecnam P-92 Eaglet.

I arrived in La Serena in July of 1973 and if initially, it was for a 2 months’ vacation, in the end I stayed a little more than 2 years. The reason being that in April 1974 I went to Santiago to start my private pilot course at the Tobalaba airfield.
Returning to La Serena, I had the opportunity to meet Manfred Sams who was just developing a fishery investigation project in the area. Thanks to Manfred, I gained experience and above all accumulate flying hours in the Cessna 337 Skymaster, flying at night in the area of Tongoy.
In those years, it was not usual to meet what we called today the spotters so for me it was an opportunity to develop contacts and friendships with the staff of the Florida aerodrome.
It gave also the opportunity to see planes that were no longer operated in Europe or if there were, in very small numbers than. I just want to remember the arrival of the Curtiss C-46 of LASA due to an engine problem.
In those years, LAN Chile was the only one that operated flights to the city of the Serena with Hawker Siddeley 748 or «Avro». It was the opportunity not only to take photos but also to travel to Santiago, to the recalled aerodrome of Los Cerrillos.

I returned to La Serena in the 80’s for a short time visit and of course, I took the opportunity to visit the aerodrome. Unfortunately, the opportunities to see planes were not fulfilled, only a few Skymaster who remind me moments of joy.

In 2009 after taking my retirement, we decided to return to Chile and our first visit was to La Serena since we have family living in this northern city.
It reminds me that the world, being so large, can be also very small and one often returns to its starting point.

For the week of the 18 of September 2017, we decided to visit our relatives in La Serena so on the 19th after a flight of 50 minutes we landed at the aerodrome of La Serena. It made me remember the 1h10-1h15 flights in the «Avro» departing from Los Cerrillos or also the 1h30 with the Skymaster out of Tobalaba.
