El pasado 14 de septiembre de 2022, Air Belgium operó su primer vuelo con Airbus A330-900neo a la ciudad de Johannesburgo, en Sudáfrica.

El día previo al inicio de su operación, la compañía organizó un acto de presentación, acompañado de un buffet, en el aeropuerto de Zaventem (Bruselas).
Esta velada tuvo lugar en un hangar de «Sabena Aerospace» ubicado cerca de las instalaciones de Brucargo, en el aeropuerto de Bruselas.
Cabe señalar que Sabena Aerospace posee el cinco por ciento del capital de Air Belgium.

Antes de detallar esta noche, a continuación les propongo una breve presentación de la compañía Air Belgium.
Tras unos primeros inicios que no resultaron por lo mejor, la nueva compañía aérea Air Belgium renació el 27 de mayo de 2016 con la colaboración de varios empresarios belgas creando así una nueva aerolínea con el objetivo de operar vuelos de largo alcance.
¡Hay que destacar que Air Belgium es también la única compañía enteramente belga!
Niky Terzakis, exdirector general de TNT Airways, asumió el cargo y se convirtió en su director general.

La empresa obtuvo su licencia de operación en 2017 y recibió 4 Airbus 340-300 ex Finnair, en arriendo de Airbus Financial Services. Estableció su base en el «aeropuerto de Bruselas Sur Charleroi» (BSCA) desde donde inauguro vuelos a Hong Kong en 2018.

Pero debido a ciertas dificultades, el operador turístico chino se retiró después de unas semanas.
En 2019 Air Belgium abre rutas a Martinica y Guadalupe. Luego siguió una diversificación en destinos (especialmente Mauricio) y carga con los A340 y dos Arabia 747 (durante los años covid la actividad principal fue la carga). Y dos nuevos A330-900 neo llegaron a la flota antes de abrir vuelos a Sudáfrica el 14 de septiembre con 2 rotaciones por semana a Johannesburgo y Ciudad del Cabo.
Si actualmente la flota consta de 9 aviones, es decir 4 aviones de pasajeros y 5 aviones de carga, se prevé aumentar la flota a 11 aviones.

Siguiendo con la presentación del 13 de septiembre, después de un cóctel alrededor del flamante Airbus A330-900 neo, fuimos invitados al otro lado del avión para una presentación de la nueva destinación, Sudáfrica.

Tras unas palabras introductorias de Niky Terzakis, el CEO de Air Belgium, seguimos con la presentación del grupo Orizio del que ahora forma parte Air Belgium.

El grupo Blueberry, formado por SABCA y Sabena Aerospace, acaba de cambiar de nombre tras la adquisición de dos filiales de Lufthansa Technik.
Este grupo, denominado Orizio, busca diversificar al máximo su oferta e incluye, en particular, la I&D (Investigación y desarrollo experimental), el mantenimiento de aeronaves y el reciclaje de piezas aeronáuticas. Este cambio de denominación también viene con nuevos objetivos.
A plazo, Orizio quiere convertirse en “el socio de ingeniería industrial y estratégico más importante de la industria aeroespacial (aviación civil, defensa, espacio y drones), tanto en términos de mantenimiento e ingeniería como en diseño, producción e innovación». (Nota de prensa de Orizio)

A esto siguió unas palabras de la ministra belga de Asuntos Exteriores, Hadja Lahbib, acerca de las relaciones entre Bélgica y Sudáfrica.

Piet Demunter, Director de Desarrollo Comercial de Brussels Airport Company, hizo uso de la palabra para presentar brevemente el aeropuerto de Bruselas,

antes de que Niky Terzakis desarrollara la interacción con Sudáfrica.

Precisó que Bélgica es el sexto socio comercial de Sudáfrica, que en este país están activas 188 empresas, que actualmente alrededor de 55.000 pasajeros viajan a Sudáfrica (la esperanza es aumentar a más de 80.000) y que es hora de renovar los vuelos directos relaciones con Bruselas, el corazón de Europa.

Por esta razón y para facilitar el papel de centro del aeropuerto de Bruselas, los vuelos tienen su base en Bruselas-National (no hay más conexiones directas y sin escalas con Sudáfrica desde la quiebra de Sobelair en 2004).
A continuación, el director general de Air Belgium presenta los acuerdos de la compañía con la aerolínea sudafricana Airlink, que permiten a Air Belgium poder conectar Bruselas con multitud de destinos africanos (ver mapa).

Termina su discurso con una presentación actual de Air Belgium,

antes de dar la palabra a su excelencia la Embajadora de Sudáfrica, señora Tokizile Xasa

y a la Responsable de Turismo de la Republica de Sud África, señora Nomasonto Ndlovu.

Apuntaron los atractivos de su país.

Y a continuación, la visita libre de la aeronave donde estuvo disponible la tripulación, tanto pilotos como personal de cabina.

This was followed by a speech by Belgian Foreign Minister Hadja Lahbib about relations between Belgium and South Africa.
Piet Demunter, Business Development Director of Brussels Airport Company, spoke to briefly introduce Brussels Airport, before Niky Terzakis elaborated on the interaction with South Africa.
He specified that Belgium is South Africa’s sixth trading partner, 188 companies being active in this country, that currently around 55,000 passengers travel to South Africa (the hope is to increase to more than 80,000) and that it is time to renew direct flights with Brussels, the heart of Europe.
For this reason and to facilitate Brussels Airport’s role as a hub, flights are based at Brussels-National (there are no more direct, non-stop connections to South Africa since Sobelair’s bankruptcy in 2004).
